Meet our specialists
Professor Samuel Ford
Prof. Samuel Ford is a highly experienced consultant general and upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgeon with a specialist interest in endoscopy. He provides private endoscopic and surgical care at HCA The Harborne Hospital, The Priory Hospital in Birmingham, and The Droitwich Spa Hospital. His practice focuses on the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of upper GI symptoms, with a particular emphasis on gastroscopy (upper GI endoscopy).
Prof. Ford routinely performs diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy for patients with symptoms such as indigestion, acid reflux, heartburn, swallowing difficulties, nausea, upper abdominal pain, and unexplained weight loss. He uses gastroscopy to identify and manage a wide range of conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum — including gastritis, oesophagitis, ulcers, Barrett’s oesophagus, and suspected upper GI cancers.
Endoscopic procedures are carried out under light sedation or local anaesthetic, as day case procedures, in a safe and comfortable hospital environment. Prof. Ford prioritises clear communication and provides patients with a detailed explanation of the findings, including onward management or referral if required. He works closely with dietitians, radiologists, and gastroenterologists to provide a joined-up approach to care.
In addition to diagnostic work, Prof. Ford performs therapeutic endoscopy where appropriate, including the control of upper GI bleeding and the removal of polyps or foreign bodies. He also advises on screening for patients with a family history of gastrointestinal cancers or known risk factors such as Barrett’s oesophagus or long-standing reflux.
Prof. Ford’s wider surgical practice includes gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, and the treatment of benign upper GI conditions. He is particularly experienced in laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures for hernias and gallstones, offering patients the option of minimally invasive treatment with faster recovery times.
He graduated from the University of Birmingham before completing specialist training in general and upper GI surgery. He also holds a PhD in cancer biology, with research focused on early diagnosis and the biology of gastrointestinal cancers. He continues to contribute to surgical training and clinical research alongside his private practice.
Prof. Ford sees patients with private health insurance and those choosing to self-fund their investigations or treatment. His endoscopy service is suitable for patients who have been referred by their GP or another consultant, or who have ongoing symptoms requiring investigation.
Patients value Prof. Ford’s clear explanations, methodical approach, and thorough assessment. His combination of surgical and diagnostic expertise makes him an ideal choice for patients needing gastroscopy or other upper GI assessment in a private setting.
